RFID Technology: from Hype to Reality |

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology enables automatic identification of goods in the supply chain.  RFID tags attached to the goods hold information, which can be read by RFID receivers using radio signals. Active RFID tags send signals themselves, while passive tags only respond when activated by requesting RFID receivers.
Despite the enormous hype over the last years, the success of RFID is still mostly limited to RFID in closed user groups, for example re-usable crates in warehouses. RFID in open environments, across parties in the supply chain, is still a major challenge. The good news is that tag prices are dropping and technology is maturing.
