Agents Print E-mail
What is an agent? There are many definitions, but one that can make things clear is the following: "An agent is a software entity that has objectives and knowledge about its environment can autonomously determine what actions or processes are appropriate for achieving its objectives."

Agents (in their most basic form) are:

  • autonomous: they can make decisions on their own;
  • social capable: they can interact with others and solve problems together;
  • responsive: they respond to changes in their environment;
  • pro-active: they decide when to respond.

Is an Agent magical? No! An Agent is nothing more or less than a piece of software that can make autonomous decisions in dynamic environments and can find local optimal solutions by cooperating with other agents. Agents have been heavily researched for more than 30 years by academic institutes, and recently they've found their way into the business world. Because of the characteristics of Agents they are highly valuable in Supply Chains. They can be used to represent the different perspective in the highly dynamic environments of the logistics world and find solutions by communicating, cooperating and negotiating with other agents.

Distribution Management Agents

Using innovative software-agents from MP Objects, the logistics sector can increase efficiency significantly. Too often shipments don't arrive according to plan, or too many planners need to ensure correct handling of shipments.

The newly developed Distribution Management Agents change all that. Each shipment is assigned a personal agent, that keeps record of all shipment data, finds possible paths and chooses best carriers.
These smart helpers full of mathematical formulas combine customer requirements, carrier possibilities, speed, and -last but not least- costs.

Next to the obvious advantages to the users, this is an excellent example of high-tech software development for logistics from Dutch soil: from mainport to brainport!
