Recently, I travelled with my family across Vietnam. One of the highlights were the floating markets for fruit and vegetables in the Mekong river delta. At 6.00 AM it is a great morning experience to sail the huge river in a small open wooden boat in a palm green setting far from roads and cities.

At remote river crossings, boats from different directions meet and form floating markets. The boats of suppliers come loaded with a single product offering, like bananas or pineapples. The buyers start with empty boats and gradually fill their boats with a variety of fresh purchases. Last but not least, facilitator boats provide fuel, snacks and coffee!

The players on the floating markets do not use any computer system. Nevertheless, the friendly Vietnamese are able to make smart decisions to optimize their Mekong supply chains. Which vegetables to bring? How much fruit to pick? Whom to deal with first? What price levels for today?

All these complex business rules are hidden under the traditional Vietnamese hats. All of a sudden, I wished I could tap their brains and add their intelligence to the product roadmap of the MPO Supply Chain Suite.
