Environmental Policies are high on the agenda of the world politics. And Corporate Sustainability has reached the board rooms. Yes, we want Green Supply Chains, which minimize the negative impact of supply chains on the environment. The challenge is to reduce the energy consumption and waste production from manufacturing, warehousing and distribution. Currently, most attention is being paid to the improvement of physical resources in supply chain execution, such as power-heat installations in plants, solar energy for warehouses and clean engines in trucks. However, these execution measures only touch the tip of the ice berg. The green performance of supply chains is largely determined by the IT for supply chain management, like the interfaces between systems, collaborative planning over sites and optimization rules in networks. Recent examples show that smart systems can reduce the environmental pressure from supply chains up to 30%. So, if you work on Green Supply Chains, do not forget IT investments. The Green ROI of IT could well be the highest. You may need a Supply Chain Suite! Dr. Ir. Martin Verwijmeren Director MP Objects |
