A Chinese expert said the logistics costs of the 29th Olympic Games in Beijing will exceed 40 billion yuan (over 3,5 billion Euro). Professor Zhang of the prestigious Beijing Jiaotong University mentioned: ‘The logistics demand for Beijing will exceed all previous Olympic Games in history, creating huge business opportunities for domestic and overseas logistics companies.’ Statistics show that more than 200 countries and regions will participate in the Beijing Olympic Games, and the sets of apparatuses and equipment for athletes, officials and reporters will top 1,2 million pieces.
In total, more than 75.000 tons of equipment and facilities need to be transported, and over 2.000 transport vehicles will be used, which brings business to logistics equipment manufacturers. Beijing built 360.000 m2 athlete apartments in the Olympic garden. Zhang: ‘The cost for removing and treating the household garbage collected from these flats will hit 1.08 billion yuan (about 90 million Euros)’. With more and more international logistics companies, like UPS, DHL and TNT entering the Chinese market, China’s huge Olympic logistics demand will become a new target for these logistics giants. At the same time, the big logistics demand also attracted many leading domestic logistics companies, such as COSCO logistics and China Shipping Logistics. Under the tense competition, China’s local logistics service providers try to learn from the advanced international experience and cultivate more logistics talents, so as to narrow the gaps between domestic and overseas logistics companies. |
